It’s been tried. Angela Merkel tried explaining to him that Germany couldn’t strike a separate trade deal with the US because deals are an EU matter. She recalled telling him ten times over the course of a meeting. Still didn’t sink in.

Even dumber considering that most Euro cars are made in the US... BMW, Mercedes, VW.... All made in the US and Canada...

The plan would, I assume, increase the tax rate on the money going out. It isn’t as though the money that is earned by the Euro car makers making products in the US stays in the US. It’s shipped back overseas.

It’ll take a hell of a lot more than that.

Mercedes USA, BMW USA or VW USA are their own entities... And the money isn’t going back anywhere but in the states. It’s reinvested in the numerous factories that are all on US soil... BMW for example invested 1 billions $$ into its Spartanburg, SC facilities, which will make it the largest BMW plant in the world. And talking about BMW, two third of the production from Spartanburg plant is exported all over the world.

Kinja'd!!!1

Nonsense. They don’t invest billions in order to help the US, they invest millions in order to make billions for the parent company. Portions of the profits are sent back to the parent company. The tax breaks they enjoy here are astronomical as well and are better than the tax incentives enjoyed by US based companies. If there was no incentive to build cars in this this country, they wouldn’t do it. Pretending otherwise is naive.

Kinja'd!!! Flavien Vidal > Sovande

Kinja'd!!!1

Where did I say they invest money for patriotic reasons in order to make the US a better place?? haha

They create A LOT of jobs, they invest A LOT of money in the US. And yes, they do this in order to make ever more money. You know, capitalism. All those cars are made in the US because it’s in their own interest just like it is in the interest in the US of having them produce cars on US soil. The incentives they are getting, which are are nowhere near as much as what american companies get to bring their businesses in certain states (ie: Amazon!) exist because they bring a tremendous amount of wealth in the states and countries they settle in.

This kind of relationship is a win-win situation on both side. Business deals don’t have to be win-lose all the time. Up to you though.... You could tax them stupidly and have them move to Mexico to compensate the loss.

Trump’s election is a GREAT thing for the entire world. It removes the US from the equation. It makes all countries in the world bypass the US... That is great for Europe, great for China, great for Japan... etc etc. It sucks for the US though. But it makes us richer.

The US currently charges a 2.5% tariff on imported cars and 25% on imported trucks. Going the other way, the EU charges a 10% tariff on imported vehicles.

This is why all of the non-American brands have plants in the US to build their trucks and SUVs. This is also one of the reasons you don’t see many American cars in Europe.

My solution? Set it at 5% for cars and trucks, going both ways.

No, of course they wouldn’t build cars in the US/Germany/Poland or wherever if there was no incentive to do so. That’s the way business works. The aim is to maximise your profits by putting your production where it is advantageous. For that reason if I buy a car from that American company, Ford, it’s very unlikely to be made there because it’s cheaper to build in Germany/Spain/Romania/India/Thailand/Turkey ( I think that includes all the Ford vehicles I can buy here).

You see lots of American vehicles in Europe though. Ford is huge and so was GM until it sold Opel/Vauxhall in 2017. I suspect Tesla has a larger market share in Europe than it has in the US. US-built vehicles are very common too, although they tend to have a BMW or Mercedes badge.

The meme machine right is so busy spreading misinformation and reveling in being ignorant bullies under the guise of “being a REAL man” and “telling it like it is” that they can’t see the world past their own insecurities. The right are the ones throwing this country down the totalitarian hallway towards a full on dictatorship. Redistribute the collective wealth of the poor and middle class to the top, completely strip the common man of what little power we had left.

But, y’know. The left has been asking politely to stop being such raging assholes all the time, so they’re clearly the big bad thought police.

A bigly reason you don’t see American cars in Europe is because American cars are not made for European consumers. Few people there would even remotely think about an Impala or Expedition etc.

However, there are tons of BMW and MB SUVs in Europe, all built in Alabama or South Carolina.

Kinja'd!!! CB > fintail
03/04/2018 at 12:19

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, but the issue for us non-Americans on the internet is a lot of our opinions get discounted entirely because we either: a) don’t live in America so we’re not allowed an opinion on American politics, b) get told that since our countries still have x problem (although to a lesser degree), that we have no place to talk about an issue since we haven’t solved it entirely, and c) get shit on for a problem unrelated to the issue being discussed.

In sum, discussing politics on the internet sucks for everyone.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > CB
03/04/2018 at 12:21

But those also apply if Americans moan about issues in other places, right?

Kinja'd!!! CB > fintail
03/04/2018 at 12:25

Kinja'd!!!0

If is a strong word there, because I imagine most discussion around a foreign issue is about how it impacts Americans.

Gallows-worthy, eh, probably not, but I’m just so tired of it being insults and people being unable to even fathom an opposing point of view that it makes discussing politics almost impossible.

On American forums, at least. If I went to discussionboard.de and complained about a goofy Merkel policy, how would it be taken?

Funny thing, the only things a reasonable person can say about the current American regime could be taken as insults. There are virtually no positive points.

I’d assume it would just be a tariff on auto imports from Europe. Cars made in the US by foreign companies wouldn’t be taxed. Though the EU would certainly retaliate, and who knows what they would end up targeting.

Most of those US vehicles are built in Europe though. For the purposes of tariffs, it’s the country of manufacture that matters, not the nationality of the corporation.

Some of the profits are distributed to all the share holders all aroundthe world like every other company... including US companies that never bothered to manufacture anything on US soil unlike those (Apple, Nike...etc). Again, capitalism. But a lot of the money generated by all the US sub-companies of these manufacturers is reinvested in the US. Again, BMW threw in a billion dollars into its SC plant. Same for VW and its Chattanooga plant and so on. So yes, all these foreign manufacturers have an extremely positive impact on the US economy... Pushing them out the door is very VERY dumb.
